Culture and Art in Everyday Life
The Nalanda gate is an umbrella for a number of secular disciplines and activities that integrate contemplative meditation practice with art, culture and education in everyday life. The Nalanda gate sponsors programs which embody artistic expression and scholarship combined with contemplative path; together they bring beauty, vividness and wisdom to our lives.
Nalanda takes its name from an eleventh-century Indian university that welcomed teachings and disciplines from many different traditions. In this same spirit, many groups and activities have developed within the Nalanda gate. At the Philadelphia Shambhala Center, activities have included contemplative art programs such as Dharma Art and space awareness, traditional Oriental disciplines such as Ikebana and calligraphy, and workshops on Buddhist psychology, health and medicine.
